* * *

Kikuchi-san and I parted ways with Mizusawa at Omiya, and I decided to walk Kikuchi-san back to her house. Mizusawa said he had something to do and went into a café at Omiya, and from there, the two of us got on the train.

We walked together along the way from Kita-Asaka Station.

“I really am glad that we worked that out… Thank you for your help, too, Kikuchi-san.”

“Oh, no. I think I feel a little better now because of this… Maybe that means my motives are impure, after all…”

“That’s not true.”

As a creator, Kikuchi-san had overstepped with Hinami more than most people would forgive. Hinami had probably been struck by the sharpness of the lines we’d made her say during that play.

“And, um…I’m glad that you and Mizusawa get along.” But even as I was saying that, remembering how I’d felt earlier didn’t feel great. No, no, it’s still a good thing that they’re getting along, mm-hmm.

Kikuchi-san studied me curiously.

“Huh, wh-what?”

“Fumiya-kun…could it be…?” Her eyes peering into mine spotted my weakness. “…Were you jealous?”

“What…?! N-no, I wasn’t…” I instinctively tried to put up a strong front, but it wasn’t good to fixate on appearances. So I decided to take off the tough mask.

“No…that’s a lie.” Then I said with resignation, “You’re right, I was pretty jealous.”

Kikuchi-san’s shoulders twitched for just an instant, and she giggled. “I’m glad. So you can get jealous, too.”

“Well, I mean, I’m only human…”

For some reason, Kikuchi-san was smiling with satisfaction. “Tee-hee. I feel like this is the first time that you’ve been jealous since we’ve started dating. I’m glad.”

“Th-the heck…?” I said, but I considered a little. “I-it’s not like this is the first time…”

Kikuchi-san giggled devilishly. “Tee-hee. Oh, really? But I never noticed.” She was still in a great mood.

“Don’t be happy about it… It’s hard for me.”

“Is it?”

“Yeah. Especially when it’s Mizusawa,” I said.

Kikuchi-san blinked. “Why him?”

“W-well…because Mizusawa is that kind of guy,” I said vaguely.

Kikuchi-san tilted her head, now even more blank. “You don’t trust Mizusawa-kun?”

“Oh, no…that’s not what I mean.”

“Mm-hmm?”

“It’s actually like, because I trust him…”

“How so?”

Maybe I wouldn’t recognize this feeling in myself unless someone asked me about it. “I think that Mizusawa…and you are both really attractive people. Like, it wouldn’t be strange for you two to just be drawn to each other, even if you didn’t mean to go behind my back.”

After staring back at me, Kikuchi-san giggled. “…You feel that strongly about me and Mizusawa-kun?”

“…Well…” I turned away while shyly scratching at my head like some manga character.

Then…

…Kikuchi-san’s fingers plucked at my sleeve. “—It’s all right.”

She tugged me over gently.

And her lips touched mine.

“?!”

It was a light one, just a moment’s touch, but it was explosive enough to blast our whole conversation out of my mind.

“You’re the only one I like, Fumiya-kun,” Kikuchi-san said, which sounded a lot like what I’d told her once before.

My soul had completely left my body, so the most I could do was weakly agree, “Y-yeah…me too.” Huh? Hey, she’s been taking the lead for a while here…

Eventually, the two of us reached Kikuchi-san’s house.
